Practice Description: I have been in practice for 35 years working with a variety of clients. I believe short term therapy is a goal for some people and some disorders. Length of treatment is dependent on the individuals needs and progress. Individual characteristics, personal needs, presentation throughout treatment and a multitude of other potential factors are accounted for in developing a therapeutic plan to best treat the client. The client and therapist must have a 'fit'- a general feeling of ease and comfort with each other. This synchrony is essential in developing the trust needed between the client and therapist. Therapy is client driven--measurable and achievable goals and objectives are needed directing therapeutic sessions. Goals are set by the client with my input and progress is assessed on a regular basis. Therapeutic changes are considered based on the obtainment or lack of obtainment of the desired outcome. Progress can be defined as having the client report 'feeling better' about themselves, their life situation, and their ability to cope with existing/new issues arising in life. Although short term therapy is desired, long term results are the ultimate goal. Some general goals include becoming a more effective/productive individual, improved self confidence/self worth, more effective and efficient means to handle daily life stressors, increased awareness of personal emotions, a better ability to identify bodily changes (i.e. muscle tension) as a possible warning sign of increased stress and anxiety. The person becomes more content feeling less anxious and fearful which produces a feeling of having a better understanding of themselves via new knowledge therapy has brought about. The person becomes more accepting of what is occurring in their own life along with more insight into themselves and others. Once called "major" life situations may now be seen as a minor obstacle when we see how our 'perception' and 'interpretation' of life situations have a substantial effect on our mood and how our relationships are viewed. Using a wholistic or 'eclectic' approach to the therapeutic process helps a person make changes in themselves learning that changing ourselves not only has a positive effect on the person but also effects others in a very positive manner.
