Practice Description: |
If you are looking for a therapist, then you have already taken an enormous step toward change.
For many years, my practice has been focused on various types of psychological trauma. I have extensive experience treating male survivors of sexual abuse and have been closely associated with MaleSurvivor.org since its inception. I have treated both men and women, and their partners, with concerns related to the after-effects of sexual abuse in their childhoods, and the interpersonal difficulties that can arise from those situations in everyday life. Additionally, I have limited experience working with transgender individuals and the process of transitioning.
In addition to sexual abuse, for the last 19 years, I have been working with combat-related PTSD, most specifically with Marine Corps, Army National Guard and Navy personnel from OEF/OIF, both in active-duty status and also, once they have separated from service, re-adjusting to civilian life. My knowledge of the culture and the ethos of military life, combined with my experience working with combat-related PTSD has provided me with a unique perspective and capacity to work with this group of remarkable individuals. Operator Syndrome, often experienced by chronic high-intensity training and operations in Special Operations can have similar effects that can make life at home difficult to manage given the optempo of the job. I am a nationally-recognized authority on the concept of moral injury as a result of combat exposure, and the issues that result from this invisible wound.
I enjoy working with artists and creative people struggling with their work and the rest of their lives. Also, I treat people who are dealing with issues related to their sexual orientation, people dealing with unsafe sexual practices, and STD/HIV-infection and sexual acting out behaviors.
I work collaboratively with the client, most often from a combination of perspectives, from a pragmatic point of view. My approach is informed by my considerable trauma and psychodynamic work, and I have easy access to cognitive-behavioral and EMDR modalities to assist the client in resolving difficult, or resistant issues. Understandably, psychotherapy is at its core a relationship. I have been in practice for more than 30 years, and I welcome an inquiry to find out if you can achieve your goals by working with me. Please give me a call or send an email to request further information.
My general practice includes individuals, (both straight and same-sex), women and men, from late adolescents/college-aged individuals to adults and elders.
