About Emily Newman
Welcome! Thank you for taking the time to get to know more about me. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor specializing in individual, couples, and family therapy, and maintain a private practice in Huntington Beach, California. As a graduate of Alliant International University specializing in marital and family therapy, I am currently serving as a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients. Among my areas of expertise are working with both children and adults sufferring from anxiety, depression, relational issues, family conflict, trauma, and domestic violence. I am an interactive, client centered therapist who focuses on working in the here-and-now. My therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges. I integrate complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.
Professional Training
I have specialized training in working with couples, military members/families/veterans, and domestic violence survivors/abusers. In addition, I integrate my training in mindfulness in helping individuals heal and realize their full potential. In working with couples: I have trained in and uses the research-based approaches of Gottman Method Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy in my work. I have completed Level I Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy with John Gottman, Ph.D. and Julie Schwartz Gottman, Ph.D. I have trained in an externship on Emotionally Focused Therapy with Dr. Susan Johnson.
I am a CalGETS outpatient provider with specialized training in the treatment of problem gamblers and their families use specific diagnostic tools to determine the extent and severity of the problem. The licensed therapist creates a therapeutic relationship to help each client succeed using proven strategies that motivate the client to change, identify distortions and feelings about gambling, identify gambling triggers, and prevent relapsing into destructive behaviors. The specific types of treatment provided to problem and pathological gamblers will be a combination of state-provided treatment materials, knowledge and skills acquired from the trainings, and techniques from the therapist’s own orientation and clinical experience. Free treatment is provided for up to 6 weeks (8 sessions), after which the therapist and client develop additional resources and/or payment plan.
In working with domestic violence: I have been trained by the Relationship Training Institute with David B. Wexler, Ph.D. in the STOP Program in working with domestic violence offenders. I am also trained in providing hope and healing working with domestic violence victims and their families by completing the Domestic Violence Counselor Advocate Training with the Women Shelter of Long Beach.
Professional Activities and Memberships
I am a proud clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. I am also a volunteer with the Soldiers Project, an organization that offers free, confidential psychological counseling for military members and their loved ones.
